Club History
The Lawrenceville Kiwanis Club was formed by prominent and
active members of our community in December 1922 and received its charter on May
25, 1923. Since the beginning, the club has followed the
Kiwanis International motto of "We Build" with great
zeal, having had an incalculable and essential impact on our city,
county, state and region.
Just a small sampling of our club's contributions
include:
- Starting the movement for and organizing what is now the Gwinnett
Chamber of Commerce;
- Publicizing and raising support for the bond issue to create
"The Button Gwinnett Hospital Authority",
which became Gwinnett Medical Center;
- Publicizing and raising support for the bond issue to create
our county wide water system;
- Sponsoring the paving, widening, straightening and
resurfacing of Highway 29 between Lawrenceville and
Athens over much of the 20th century;
- Bringing Highway 20 from Loganville to
Lawrenceville;
- Bringing Highway 316 "Expressway Leg" into
Lawrenceville;
- Organizing a Library in Lawrenceville;
- Sponsoring the Gwinnett County Planning Commission;
- Helping to secure Central Gwinnett High School
for Lawrenceville, for which it has also purchased
equipment and helped to build sports facilities;
- Purchasing playground equipment at Lawrenceville area
elementary schools;
- Many other projects that have facilitated the growth of the
city, Gwinnett County, the schools, youth programs, assistance
programs for children and the poor, and more.
In short, Lawrenceville and Gwinnett would not be all the
wonderful things that attract so many residents to choose to live
and work here without the dedicated service of the Lawrenceville
Kiwanis Club and its members.
Below, some articles from the club's long and rich history are
being added as available.
